Discover Kanji Ramen Noodle & Izakaya

If you’re wandering through Bend, Oregon, and craving a unique culinary experience, Kanji Ramen Noodle & Izakaya at 61160 S Hwy 97 suite c, Bend, OR 97702, United States, is an absolute must-visit. Walking in, the first thing that strikes you is the warm, inviting ambiance. The combination of modern Japanese décor with cozy wooden accents creates a space that’s perfect for a casual lunch or a relaxed dinner with friends. I remember stopping by on a chilly evening, and the smell of simmering broth instantly made the trip worthwhile.

The menu here is a delightful mix of traditional ramen bowls and authentic izakaya-style dishes. One of my personal favorites is the miso tonkotsu ramen. The broth is rich, creamy, and perfectly balanced, made from slow-simmered pork bones that give it an umami depth that’s hard to beat. The noodles are slightly chewy, cooked just right, and the toppings-soft-boiled eggs, bamboo shoots, and nori-add a satisfying texture and flavor contrast. On my last visit, I noticed that many regulars gravitate toward the shoyu ramen, a classic soy-based option that’s lighter but equally flavorful.

The izakaya side of the restaurant is equally impressive. Small plates like yakitori skewers, karaage chicken, and takoyaki are ideal for sharing, and the presentation shows the chef’s attention to detail. I’ve tried several dishes here over multiple visits, and the consistency is remarkable. The staff are knowledgeable about each dish, often offering pairing suggestions with sake or Japanese craft beers. A local food critic once highlighted Kanji Ramen Noodle & Izakaya for maintaining high-quality standards while keeping the dining experience approachable, which I can fully attest to.

Beyond the taste, the restaurant’s approach to sourcing ingredients stands out. They prioritize fresh, local produce whenever possible, which not only supports the community but also elevates the flavor profile of every dish. Studies on Japanese cuisine indicate that the quality of ingredients significantly affects umami perception, and Kanji Ramen Noodle & Izakaya clearly applies this principle expertly. Every bowl of ramen feels like a labor of love, with a balance of protein, vegetables, and seasoning that showcases true culinary expertise.

For anyone exploring Bend’s dining scene, the location on Highway 97 is convenient and easily accessible. Parking is available, and the layout accommodates both small groups and solo diners. Many patrons leave glowing reviews online, praising both the menu variety and the friendly service. Personally, I’ve found that visiting during off-peak hours allows for a quieter experience, where you can savor each bite without rush.

The attention to detail extends to their drink menu as well. Japanese craft beers, sake flights, and even seasonal cocktails are designed to complement the dishes. On one occasion, I paired the spicy miso ramen with a chilled Junmai sake recommended by the server, and the combination was surprisingly harmonious, highlighting the subtle flavors in both the broth and the drink.

Every visit reinforces why Kanji Ramen Noodle & Izakaya has built a reputation as a reliable spot for authentic Japanese cuisine in Bend. From the thoughtfully prepared menu to the approachable yet skillful service, it’s clear that the team behind the restaurant values both quality and customer experience. Whether you’re a ramen aficionado or just in search of a memorable meal, this location consistently delivers on every front.

  • I came here on a Thursday in between lunch and dinner. I was the only customer there. I ordered the Thai tea, Japanese bun (karaage), and the miso ramen. This review will be long and in depth because the food was phenomenal and I cannot recommend it more. I came because I wanted something warm to clear my sinuses from allergies. Starting with the service; I am giving it 5/5 stars, as soon as I walked in an older woman said welcome in and led me to a table. She was extremely attentive and brought out the ramen the second I finished my bun. There was a younger gentleman in the back in his phone; I was the only person there so I assumed he was on break or there wasn't anything for him to do. Atmosphere- lovely art on the walls, comfy chairs, sensory friendly lighting and noise level (at least when no one is there lol). Enough said; 5/5 stars. Food- best Thai tea in bend I've tried; a sweet and earthy flavor and larger portions than anywhere else in bend 5/5 stars. The karaage Japanese bun had a slightly unexpected presentation; it was more like a sandwich. It consisted of a fresh cucumber slice, a piece of fried chicken, a pickled Daikon slice, and a thick dark sauce (like teriyaki but saltier and not quite as sweet). Holy shit I never knew fried chicken could be so refreshing, it was juicy and delicious, paired with the veggies and sauce it was heavenly. I like the bun but it was a little tough and for that reason it gets a 4.8/5. On to the main dish: miso ramen. The broth was phenomenal, salty and with a very slight spicy kick from the miso. The toppings were fresh and high quality. I'll start by saying I don't normally like eggs or mushrooms but I really enjoyed them in this dish. The egg was heavenly; a slight sweetness and a perfectly jammy yolk. The wood mushroom was a great texture and mostly soaked up the flavor of the broth. Green onion was fresh and gave a nice little kick. The corn was sweet and soft. I'm not a huge fan of pork and the pork in this dish was just okay, not super juicy, the tiniest and I mean tiniest bit chewy. The bamboo shoots soaked up the broth flavor and provided a nice texture. The noodles were soft but not too much so. Overall 4.5/5 for the miso ramen. I left with a full tummy and snot dripping out of my nose lol, 5/5 awesome spot, location kinda sucks but it's worth it to drive there. Prices aren't cheap but aren't too expensive, I'd say pretty normal pricing for bend. I can't drink (underage) but they had a good selection of Japanese beer and sake. Highly recommend.

  • So delicious and the portions are much bigger than I expected! I ordered the chicken yakisoba and shared with multiple people and still had lots of leftovers. The service was so great, my family and I felt right at home! They were cracking jokes with us and were so incredibly kind as they even boxed our good for us. It such a cute environment with wonderful decorations everywhere.

  • Hey you!!! Yeah, Im talking to you. The person reading reviews of this place... I'll say the thai tea is the best thai iced tea I've ever had. The karaage chicken was fire, and the garlic ramen blows your mind how good it is. Anyone who says they had rude service are a bunch of Karens. Why would you want to get delivery when you can see the sweetest lady take care of you and a sweet man wheel a cart of food to you. In short, great ramen, great service, Kanji Ramen

  • Very sweet woman serving, attentive but not pushy. Very good food, relatively small menu but delicious. Mille-crepe for dessert was a nice surprise! Be mindful that if you can’t/don’t eat pork, there is only 1 ramen dish. There are several other dishes, though. Quiet, clean, only about 6-8 booths. I’ll definitely be back next time I’m in town.

  • Absolutely love this place! The ramen is my favorite and honestly the only thing we order! #4 is my absolute favorite! The people that work here are so sweet and I love to see them! Fresh and delish!! Must go!

  • By far the BEST Japanese restaurant we’ve been to. Top tier service, delicious and enticing menu, and the atmosphere and decor was comforting and cozy. Unfortunately we aren’t local, but this will be a mandatory stop every time we’re in the area!

  • A Hidden Gem with Heart and Flavor Kanji Ramen Noodle & Izakaya delivered on every level. From the moment I walked in, the ambiance pulled me in—warm, inviting, and rich with culture. You could immediately tell the team here has a true passion for ramen and what they do. The service was incredible—attentive, kind, and knowledgeable. The food? Absolutely delicious. Every bite was devoured, and I already have a list of dishes I want to try next time. The menu has variety without being overwhelming, and the prices were surprisingly affordable for the quality. So glad I stopped in. If you're craving authentic, soul-satisfying ramen in a setting that feels both modern and rooted in tradition, this is the spot.
